[It would be impossible for him to turn his back. Hell, even if he didn't know their story so damn well, he's always had a hard time with looking out for just him. No way. The Games never took that away from him, never would.]
Step one, tell Peeta to stab the things that actually go bump in the night, instead of the petite French doctors. Step two, try not to freak him out when I already know who he is.
[He clears his throat casually, flipping the page.]
This place is still fuckin' weird.
[She can't help but huff a laugh at the memory. At the time it had been bizarre but...sweet.]
Katniss and you are close still, yes? She may be able to explain who you are.
[A beat.]
A man that was searching for god appeared out of nowhere in my house and started to look for books- fuckin' weird is an understatement.
[Of course, he's referring to Peeta baking in general, but then you throw a curveball at him and he's quiet for a moment.]
... Searching for god?
[Whelp.]

In my world, we'd refer to him as 'that crazy homeless guy on the corner that smells weird', but I guess now that I'm here, anything's possible.

Don't believe so, no. [and then, teasingly] Though we both know I would have been the grand champion.

That does not make it any less irritating. I do not know how you stand me.

I've always been more of an observer, even since I was a kid. Guess my role in the army just came naturally.
That does explain your random ogling of passing villagers the morning you found your scope.
If someone's hurt, you can't help but turn into a doctor, right? I do the same. Give me a scope, I'll be in the bushes cackling and watching people like a creep.
[At least he's admitting it, right?]
[There's nothing quite so refreshing in a man as honesty. Even if 'cackling' makes her quirk a brow.]
I cannot honestly imagine you cackling, Rick.

Besides, it's not like I can see into anyone's windows this time around.
...this time around?

Back home, rooftops at the district. I had the job of watching the refugees settling down through their windows at night... Let's just say I've seen a little too much of some of 'em and needed to scrub my eyes out with soap once or twice.
You could always have looked away- but. Is a sniper not trained for...oh how did Marion put it. Hm. Something...about not focusing on any one detail, but keeping your eyes focused for movement? It was something to that effect. I honestly cannot remember right now.
Focusing on one thing tends to get you killed, though, yeah. You probably know that most snipers never work alone for that very reason; our backs tend to be open field for attack.
