If someone's hurt, you can't help but turn into a doctor, right? I do the same. Give me a scope, I'll be in the bushes cackling and watching people like a creep.

Back home, rooftops at the district. I had the job of watching the refugees settling down through their windows at night... Let's just say I've seen a little too much of some of 'em and needed to scrub my eyes out with soap once or twice.

[Aw, cute. She's still going to ask because not being answered is worse than him saying 'oh it only happens now and again'.]

You could always have looked away- but. Is a sniper not trained for...oh how did Marion put it. Hm. Something...about not focusing on any one detail, but keeping your eyes focused for movement? It was something to that effect. I honestly cannot remember right now.

That depends. 'Hunters' look for movement. Watchers watch. I'm a little bit of both, sometimes more than the other depending on what my duty is that day.

Focusing on one thing tends to get you killed, though, yeah. You probably know that most snipers never work alone for that very reason; our backs tend to be open field for attack.

I'm a surgeon with interesting associates Rick, not a tactician or military mogul. What I know comes from what I'm told.

[She lifts a shoulder, winces a git, and sighs. Still itches, stretches, and aches. She'll get over it, but not before asking a second time, though a bit sideways.]

How much of this plays into your inability to sleep?

I tended to go to sleep late anyway. My sleeping schedule isn't that different from my old one.

[Only this one has restless sleeping and two or three hours of sleep and half-moons under his eyes. They're staring to be a facial trait at this point. Maybe no one will really notice them, anyway. He's had jobs where he's had very little to no sleep - but give him a few more months of wearing down before he admits this is a problem.]

Familiarity with insomnia doesn't make it any healthier, Rick.

So long as you are actually able to rest while you sleep- there is not much I can say. The night we met I had gone the better pat of four days without more than six hours of sleep in total.

Well, I've been getting plenty of restful sleep, so don't sweat it.

He doesn't need people to worry over things so trivial as his sleeping patterns. He can deal like he always has.]

[Because lying about that, what point would it serve? If he says he is rested, and she's not forcing him to spend the night for observation, she'll take his word for it. As long as he's not her patient, she'll listen. Should that change, her opinion might as well. But. He looks well and seems fine, really.]

I honestly think a stab wound would have been much worse; the laceration, as it is, bled quite a bit, and hurt, but my ribcage and sternum prevented damage to anything vital. If he had 'poked' me in truth? It would have ended differently.

I can imagine. You're in the club, remember? You don't need anymore admission tickets than you have.

[It's not a guilt trip if it's not deliberate. Right? Right.]

Double the tickets mean double the perks, though. [She huffs a low, rough laugh.] I can say this much. Between being stabbed and being shot? I think I prefer being shot.

Me, too. [He rolls his eyes at that. Soldiers get shot. He's just fortunate that That One Time he was shot wasn't anything serious. He's avoided getting stabbed in his life, he'd prefer to keep it like that.] Bullets are just a better alternative, if I had to pick.

It may be my memory glossing it over but- I don't think it hurt as much...or I was slipping into shock. I'm not entirely certain which. [It was hard to say, really. Even if it made limping the last fifteen feet down the hall an absolute bitch.]

[He itches his hairline. He has to at least make sure it's not something that weighs on her so much it's tough to talk about. He likes the Rule 2 thing, but. He doesn't want her telling him this unless she's passed the things that come with it.]

Weird is relative, Rick, but. I'm fine. Really. I did something foolish and this is the result. I've come to terms with it, I mean. It's difficult to continue to be bothered by something like this when you meditate regularly with a Jedi. They make a habit at poking at such subjects until you learn to live with it...or you stab them.

[He laughs a little.]

Meditating. Jedis are helpful fellas.

I'm certain that if I ever explain the entirety of the situation to you, you'll agree that it was fairly foolish if not 'fucking stupid'.

[It's only an if because she doesn't know if he'd want to be told. There's enough on his mind about this place without her adding her own foolish and sanguine past to the mix.]

Well you did sign up for the American military...So there's several hundred points in your favor right there in the dumb department.

Even before the military. Hell, that's why I was certified. I was a very bitter needy person in my teenage years. [Pfft. Those were the days. Of course, Doyle's aware that the military has plenty of smart guys - Flynn was a good guy, smart and family-oriented. Pete, Major Laurie, all those guys, they were good people.

But he'd be lying if he said some of them didn't fit a bill. It's like high school. You've got those... people in particular you wonder about.

No use bothering with that anymore, anyway.]

I guess now that I'm officially 'retired', my dumb American points are down?
